Career progression in science – options beyond the bench

Many scientists follow a career in research without considering alternatives. This course of action often ends up being unsatisfactory, as it leads them to take up unsuitable jobs or to abandon science altogether. This session will provide researchers at any point in their careers with the opportuniy to look beyond the bench and to discover new and exciting career options.

Image Michele Catanzaro is a physicist and science journalist.
He holds a degree in Physics from the University of Rome, La Sapienza, and a PhD in Physics from the Technical University of Catalonia. His thesis addressed the study of dynamic processes in complex networks. As a freelance journalist, he collaborates with El Periódico and Global Talent (in Spain), Le Scienze and Repubblica.it (in Italy), and Physicsworld (in the UK). He sits on the board of the Catalan Association for Science Communication (ACCC). His work has been recognized through the Joan Oró and the Teresa Pinillos awards.

Marta Príncep, Director of Innovation Area of Biocat.
She holds a PhD in Biological Sciences (University of Barcelona) focused in pharmacological research in neurosciences. She has more than 17 years of experience in a pharmaceutical company (Ferrer Grupo) in which she has lead the CNS pharmacology department, from the discovery to the preclinical development. Since 2001 she held the responsibility of project management of international collaborations with other companies. She holds expertise in organization of seminars and courses. In 2008 she joined Biocat where she is working as Director of Innovation.

Sergi Pumarola, co-founder and general manager of BIOGLANE.
He is an experienced executive with more than 18 years in multinational corporate development in technical business environment mainly API's (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients), dietetics and nutritional supplements, food and feed additives. He holds a Degree in Pharmacy (1986) and Honors in Physiology and Nutrition (1987) at the Universitat de Barcelona and a Health Diploma at the Escuela Nacional de Sanidad (Spain) (1987). He also received an M.B.A. at ESADE Business School (Barcelona) in 1990. On completion of his studies he has developed different positions in Pharma-Chemical business Corporate Development including : business plan & sales strategy development, corporate development project management, market research, new products development, budget control and profitability analysis, general planning and coordination.

Imma Pascual , Advancell Alternative Testing Business Unit Director.
Holds a degree in Chemistry, and Master in Biochemistry in addition to Business & Marketing Management courses. She has more than 20 years in sales & business management experience in Life Science sector, in big multinational companies such as Perkin Elmer, Amersham, Pharmacia Biotech and General Electric, always involved in providing solutions to researchers. Since 2010 she manages the Alternative Testing division within Advancell organization.

Michela Bertero, International Collaboration & Sponsorship at the CRG
She holds a PhD in Biological Sciences & Genetics from the University of Pavia (Italy). Her postdoctoral work focused on protein crystallography of large macromolecular complexes: from respiratory complexes in bacteria (University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada) to transcriptional machineries (Gene Center, Munich, Germany). In 2006, she joined the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona as scientific officer of the Systems Biology Program. As scientific officer, she was responsible of project acquisition and management of international collaborative projects funded by the European Commission. Since beginning of 2010, she is responsible of a new department dedicated to International Collaboration & Sponsorship at the CRG.

Jorge Domínguez, Head of Innovation and Strategic Projects IRB Barcelona
Holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from the Autonomous University of Madrid. Research work at: the Center for Molecular Biology (CSIC-UAM), Madrid; the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Heidelberg; the European Institute of Oncology (IEO), Milan; the University of Barcelona, and IRB Barcelona.
Master in Leadership and Science Management, Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona.Since March 2009 his mission is to consolidate an efficient technology transfer system and to collaborate in the development of the strategic projects performed at IRB Barcelona.
